Switching food without tummy trouble
28 September 2026 · 4 min read · Paw & Co vet team

The 7-day transition plan that keeps poops firm and bowls happy when moving to a new recipe.
Gut bacteria get used to a particular diet. Swap overnight and many pets react with loose stools or a sulky refusal to eat.
Days 1–2
Mix 25% new food with 75% old food.
Days 3–4
Go to half and half. Keep an eye on stool quality — a little softness is normal.
Days 5–6
75% new food, 25% old.
Day 7
100% new food. If things get messy at any step, stay at that ratio for two extra days. A probiotic chew during the switch helps a lot.
